Experience Charleston in our new space. Charleston in Lewes has a shop, café and a free programme of co-produced community projects, artist-led workshops, gallery activities, and a learning programme for local state schools, further education and higher education groups.

Charleston in Lewes attracted 40,000 visitors through the door during the first season, 45% more than anticipated, a demand that saw the initial season of exhibitions extended for two months to reach more people. From the beginning, it has been important for Charleston in Lewes to be a space loved and used by the community. This season Charleston has introduced Pay What You Can days on the last Sunday of the month, Deaf-led BSL tours for the local Deaf and hard of hearing community, and Quiet Mornings for those visitors with additional needs who prefer a less busy environment.

Since opening, Charleston in Lewes has received international recognition from the press for its exhibitions, including articles in the New York Times, Financial Times, Guardian and BBC. Charleston’s long term goal of opening a permanent National Bloomsbury Gallery in the heart of Lewes already has the endorsement of Tate, V&A and the National Portrait Gallery.
