We’ve just launched an event in collaboration with Cheese Please & Symposium Wine Emporium to offer you wine and cheese pairing evenings in lockdown!
Here’s what our hosts, George & Bec, had to say about why they put the event together…
“When Bec moved to Lewes to study her wine diploma at Plumpton college, she fell in love with Symposium’s cool dark cave of wine treasures, and the inimitable and sunny Cheese Please.
With expert tasting notes and pairing advice from the owners of each, she would like to lead you through an evening of a little learning, and a lot of wine and cheese, in conversation with her partner, the opinionated and gourmand George. They both recently became members of the Wine Scholar Guild, and Bex has been teaching for wine schools as well as helping people open bars for years now, but this won’t all be stuffy or serious, it’ll be relaxed and intimate. Mostly what the two of them like to do together is eat, drink, and be merry! How about you?”
Join in on Zoom on the 11th, 18th, and 25th February. The tastings will take place from 7:30-9:00pm, with extra time at the end for anyone who wants to stick around, ask more questions, and carry on the merriment with another glass.
The first series will be a battle between Old World and New World wines!
Symposium's Rob and Henry have advised on some outstanding bottles:
Week 1 - White Wines - Thursday 11th February
France’s most famous AOC for Chenin Blanc - Vouvray - this one from Chateau Moncontour battles for supremacy over a rather lovely little South African number from Symposium favourites The Spice Route. Who grew it best? You decide!
Week 2 - Orange/Natural Wines - Thursday 18th February
With a resurgent interest in how wines ‘used’ to be made, we delve into the slightly funkier, more unusual styles coming out of the Old Word - or perhaps you might even argue - the Ancient World, with the famous Romanian Solara Orange wine taking on a very unique, very unusual Chilean wine 'No Es Pituko'.
Week 3 - Red Wines - Thursday 25th February
The clash of the titans! The Stone Elephant (Time Waits for No One) has a report card as illustrious as the name is long! The Spanish call this grape ‘Monastrell’, and we think they’ve made something marvellous with it! But The Spice Route (so good we included them twice) are hot on their heels! Preferring to call the grape ‘Mourvedre’ like the French, they think their version of this old-school classic will be the victor. There can only be one!
Fran will be selecting two cheeses that pair very classically with the two wines. These are tried and tested magnificent matches that though delicious, are set in their traditional ways. In to the mix she’s also picking a Wildcard cheese - a new contender for best cheese pairing that might just disrupt the old and pave way for the new. Either way, who doesn’t love eating 3 different cheeses with their wine!
If you join us for all three evenings, it’ll cost just £150, but for those who want to dip a toe, or want to join just one as a special occasion, we offering them as standalone tastings for £60
Each tasting will include:
2 bottles of wine - with the theme Old World v.s. New World - from Symposium Wine Emporium
Tasting notes and cards in case you’re the kind of drinker who likes to know more!
3 specially selected artisan farmhouse cheeses, 120g of each, from Cheese Please
Try our selected pairing for each wine, and our wildcard cheese
Cheese ‘notecard’ in with your pack so you can learn more, and pick your favourite match
