The Society's museums have acquired unrivalled collections over the past 175 years, which illustrate Sussex history from prehistoric to modern periods. The Society now cares for and manages several hundred thousand individual objects, from fire engines to fine art, across its six accredited museums.
Each exhibition item has been selected to reflect the collections' diversity, from the materials used to produce both rare and everyday objects, made for daily or ceremonial use, all with specific reasons for being acquired formally into the museums' collections.
The collections are a wonderfully rich and significant resource, very much treasured by the Society. Their existence and the continued development of these collections supports the Society in meeting its aims to promote, share and celebrate the history of Sussex for the next 175 years.
This project is funded by the Culture Recovery Fund for Heritage. The Culture Recovery Fund is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England, using funds provided by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
