'HEROES'

and adapted by Tom Stoppard.

It is 1959. In a residential home for veterans of the First World War, somewhere in France, Gustav, Henri and Philippe sit on their terrace and gaze at the poplar trees in the distance. Frustrated, bored and scared of the formidable Sister Madeline they plan their escape. Will it be French Indochina, will it be a picnic under the distant poplars? Will it be today or tomorrow? Will it happen at all?

The play is based on Sibleyras's discovery that veterans of the First World War were often retired at relatively young ages, often living-out the remainder of their lives in French military hospitals – in some cases for 30 years or more. His play takes a kind of 'snapshot' of the daily lives of three of these veterans. There is a gentle humour about the play as these three discuss their fellow inmates and the machinations of the Nuns who look after them. We promise a funny and reflective evening.
