The picture above shows the Air Sea Rescue base that operated from the Second World War until the early 1970s. The prefabricated buildings were demolished in 1973. Tidal flooding was a common occurrence in this area, with the River Ouse overflowing its banks.
Until the early 2000s Huggetts field was largely undeveloped because of the flood risk. This picture, taken in August 1990 shows the open space that existed here at that time. You can see the lifeboat house on the left with the lifeboat moored a little upstream, between a tug and fishing boats. A new lifeboat house was built as part of the redevelopment of this area which saw houses and flats built here as well facilities for the fishing industry.
This picture shows the southern end of Huggetts Field being developed for housing in 2001-2. The land was raised about 2 meters and banks called bunds were put in place to protect the properties from flooding.
