For two days this August, Anne of Cleves House will be transformed into a bustling late medieval household, alive with the sights, sounds and smells of a grand diplomatic visit.
The Companye of Mortimer's Cross will portray the resident hosts of the house as they welcome prestigious Papal envoys from Gubbio, Italy – Lord and Lady Gabrielli and their noble household.
Used to accommodate visiting dignitaries to the Priory of St Pancras across the road, the historic Anne of Cleves House once again plays its original role. The lower rooms will be alive with activity, as cooks and house staff labour in a working medieval kitchen to prepare lavish meals for their honoured guests. Meanwhile, the Gabrielli family will take up residence in the upper chambers, enjoying the comforts and status befitting their rank.
Visitors will be free to wander through the house and witness first-hand the contrast between the worlds of the high-born and the servants. From the rituals of medieval hospitality and etiquette to the clothing, medicine and daily duties of the time, there will be much to explore and discover.
This living history weekend offers a rare glimpse into the workings of a medieval home preparing to impress.
