Friends of Anne of Cleves House Talk: The Ghost Stories of M R James

About

A talk by Anthony Hope, hosted by The Friends of Anne of Cleves' House

Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936) was an English scholar and writer who was successively Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University and Provost of Eton College. A knowledge expert in church archaeology, medieval manuscripts and the early history of the Bible, he is best known for his ghost stories. Originally written to entertain an invited audience of friends, they were read aloud by candlelight in his room at King's College, usually around Christmas time. His stories often feature a donnish character whose cloistered existence is suddenly plunged into supernatural terror. Enduringly popular, and recently adapted for television, the stories evoke a subtle atmosphere of unearthly menace but, on this occasion, please be reassured – you will be amongst friends.
