Graham Mayhew's Lewes History Group talk will take place in November 2023. It will give the audience some insights into the enormous range of material that is available for anyone who is researching a community or individuals during the Great War, how one might start to go about it and what sorts of things one could expect to find.
Graham Writes; "My involvement in writing a definitive book on Lewes’s Great War dead came from an approach made to me in April 2014 by the then Town Clerk, Steve Brigden to provide an update to the names on Lewes War Memorial following an enquiry from Lewes British Legion. Little did either of us know that it would be nine years later that the results of my work would eventually be published.
What I aim to do in this talk is give some insights into the enormous range of material that is available these days for anyone who is researching a community or individuals during the Great War, how one might start to go about it and what sorts of things one could expect to find.
The talk will be illustrated with examples of some of the main sources I actually used and should be of particular interest to anyone thinking about finding out more about their own ancestors or about the history of our town, or indeed any other town or village in England during the early 20th century."
