About

Lewes is set to come alive this 4 July with a bold and colourful Festival of Democracy through its historic streets.

Taking place in the 250th anniversary year of the US Declaration of Independence, the festival celebrates Lewes’ connection to Thomas Paine, whose ideas helped shape democratic movements around the world. Inspired by Paine, the festival invites the community to reflect on the meaning and future of democracy, and we invite everyone in our town and surrounding villages, as well as visitors and supporters, to take part in this vibrant event celebrating local groups and projects.

Working in partnership, Lewes Climate Hub and Thomas Paine: Legacy will lead a parade along the High Street featuring banners, musicians and costumes. Dressing up is encouraged, with themes including Greeks and Romans, the Battle of Lewes, French and American revolutionaries, Suffragettes and Civil Rights campaigners. Bring your own banner. Rain or shine – be prepared for a great celebration of our town!

The parade will start at 1–1.30pm, led by a walking skeleton of Thomas Paine. The parade will arrive at Lewes Castle’s Gun Garden where music, poetry and speeches will take place from 3pm.
