Screening of Metropolis with live musical accompaniment by Yosi Marshall

Yosi Marshall will be composing and playing music to accompany Metropolis, the 1927 silent movie, at All Saints Centre in Lewes, on Friday 15 September at 7pm.

Directed by Fritz Lang, Metropolis is a masterpiece of German Expressionist cinema, with an eerie prescience, featuring robots and an automated world. In a highly stylised futuristic city, a cultured and privileged ruling class exists above a bleak underworld populated by mistreated workers.

Yosi will be playing piano, organ, synths, sax, clarinet, flute and percussion to accompany the film. He will improvise freely to suit the scene, whether it is comedic, tragic, action-packed or dialogue based - telling the story through the music. He is looking forward to giving you a taste of his talent.

He performed Charlie Chaplin Modern Times at the OSO Centre in Barnes to a packed house as well as having been a regular performer at the Classic Cinema Club, the International School of London and Addison Primary School. He has played musical accompaniment on such films as the Artist, Alfred Hitchcock's The Lodger, The Passion of Joan of Arc, the Arabian Nights, the Man who Laughs, Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times, Buster Keaton : The General, the Voyager, Balloonatic and the Electric House. During lockdown, he steamed musical accompaniment online to films such as Fritz Lang's Metropolis and the comedies of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.

This is the second in a series of silent movies Yosi has played music to at the All Saints Centre, the first being The Temptress, 1926, starring Greta Garbo in June. Next after Metropolis will be the 1922 vampire classic, Nosferatu, on Sunday 29 October at 7.30pm at Brighton Unitarian church and Modern Times on Friday 17th November at 7.30pm at the All Saints Centre.

The film lasts 2 and a half hours and there will be an interval where drinks and light refreshments will be served.
