Backstrap weaving is an ancient technique that has been used to create fabric for centuries, connecting the weaver deeply to the process. In this workshop, you'll have the chance to learn the basics of this traditional method, thoughtfully adapted for a modern context.
With the loom relying on the tension created by your body, the 'backstrap' is worn around your waist and attached to the loom's beams, which are secured to a stable surface. As you move, the loom responds, allowing you to weave with a unique sense of connection and rhythm.
By the end of the workshop, you will have mastered how to set up the loom, attach warp strings with the proper tension, and use tools like shed sticks and heddles. You'll also explore basic tapestry techniques and finishing methods, completing the day with your very own woven wall hanging and the tools to continue your weaving journey at home!
The workshop includes an exclusive tour of the modernist home and studio at Charleston, providing a glimpse into its rich artistic history, along with all the materials you'll need to bring your creations to life. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day, including a delicious lunch made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
