About

Virginia Woolf re-bound and re-covered books from her own personal library throughout her adult life.  Although trained in traditional bookbinding techniques, Woolf developed her own distinctive informal binding aesthetic, using colourful marbled and patterned papers, cutting up and re-using leather spine labels, making her own handwritten labels, and re-purposing stationery for endpapers.

Taking inspiration from items in the Monk's House collection, including Virginia Woolf's re-bound set of Shakespeare books and the stationery on Leonard Woolf's desk, in this half-day workshop, you will re-bind a hard-back book, using a choice of covering papers and vintage stationery and ephemera.  You will be guided throughout the afternoon by knowledgeable bookbinder, Sara from Beloved Bindery.

No previous bookbinding experience is required. All materials and equipment will be provided, although you are welcome to bring your own hardback book and any stationery/ephemera/collage materials you wish to use in your binding.  Your ticket includes a visit to the house to see Leonard Woolf's desk and Virginia's handbound Shakespeare collection.

The event will take place in the garden at Monk's House so you will be outside for the afternoon.  If the weather forecast is inclement then the event will be cancelled and you will be issued a full refund.
